Crafting with Shells

Summer’s here, so it’s time to break out the seashell crafts. Chances are, if you’ve ever gone on a family beach vacation, you’ve got a few lying around. If not, plan a family trip to the beach early this summer and collect your supplies. If a beach getaway just isn’t in the cards for you and your family, not to worry. You can either buy a handmade wreath, or, if you’re more of a do-it-yourself family, purchase bulk shells at craft and dollar stores and get out the low-temperature glue gun.

To make a wreath like this one, start with a preformed grapevine wreath from the craft store. If she’s old enough, have your child hot-glue the shells to the wreath. If she isn’t old enough, you can wield the glue gun and she can decide where to place the shells. Cover the face and sides of the wreath with shells, checking from different angles to prevent empty patches. Make a wire loop at the back for hanging, or just lean it on top of a buffet or mantel.

VARIATION: Cover napkin rings with shells in a similar fashion to bring a touch of the ocean to your tabletop.
