This Pottery Barn Kids bedroom suite has a full-on Kennebunkport vibe, but the tasteful details and palette keep it from going into kitsch overload, as theme rooms sometimes can.
How To:
Start with bead-boarded walls (they can be installed in panels found at home-improvement stores), and paint them a cool white.
Leave some wood details such as window trim, and bring in nautical elements through bedding (or this fantastic vintage speedboat-inspired bed), chambray-hued drapes, and lantern-style lights.
A garland of nautical alphabet flags, a similar rug, and framed boat illustrations carry through the theme (either color-copy from a book, or scour Ebay for frameable prints).
Keep the color palette simple and masculine: crisp clues and whites, natural stained wood, a few hits of red. And get him to promise to keep the room neat before you agree to redecorate: this style looks best when it’s neat as a pin. After all, you’re running a tight ship around here.
